Linguist of the Year Donates Prize to Handicap Foundation

Lydia Callis was named the 2012 Inttranet Linguist of the Year. Her claim to fame was the tenure she served under New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, as his sign language interpreter during Hurricane Sandy. 

The citation on the award for Lydia Callis said, “Lydia Callis and her colleagues are helping to cross the language barrier of deafness – one of the highest there is – amply justifying her recognition as the Inttranet™ "Linguist of the Year" in 2012”.

Instead of spending her prize money, she chose to continue in her giving nature and donate the prize money to Handicap International, an international organization specializing in disabilities. The organization is non-government, non-political and non-profit and seeks to work alongside people with disabilities, by assisting them to become self-reliant.  

Sophie Mazoyer, the External Communications Manager for Handicap International France said of the donation, “Handicap International is proud to be the recipient of the Linguist of the Year Award in 2013. With this donation of 1,000 euros, for example, the association can make 580 children aware of the risks of explosive remnants of war in countries affected by armed conflict, or clear 2700 m² of land affected by landmines in Mozambique”.
